"Shadow of Turning" is up at InterGalactic Medicine Show (Issue #14). I love the artwork done for the story by Nick Greenwood--it amazes me how much of the essence of a story can be caught in one image. Brilliant.

I need to come up with a title for the new novel. Since it's nearing the end of the first draft, I think I need to start referring to it as something other than "Laeran's story." I thought about "The Bones Beneath" today, just because it works on many levels. Though something about stone would also be appropriate, I think. Sigh. I wish coming up with titles was easier for me.

That I need to be, in this moment, what I want to be in this moment. I can't be hoping to get better, get more balanced, get more sensitive (though I still believe in having goals and striving towards them, of course). But the horse doesn't live in future expectations or wants. He lives in this moment, in what is happening now, with me on his back, and how that feels to us both. And if I am balanced, if my aids are correct, he responds accordingly. So I am learning to expect of myself, not that I hope some day to attain technique, balance, straightness, etc., but that I possess them now. And suddenly I find that future hopes have become present achievements.

In other words, I guess, I've discovered I need to think less and _be_ more. Trust myself, because my doubt gets in the way of what I really know, and when it does that it limits what I can experience.

I'm trying on a new title for my novel. I'll let the novel wear it for a while, and see if it fits. Right now I think I like it: Where Sleep the Unquiet Dead. Everyone in the novel is dealing, in one way or another, with their past, and the people they have loved that have died, and dealing with the issues they have inherited from their dead affect their actions through the course of the novel. So this title feels more apt than any other one I've come up with. The most recent one, Legacy, just didn't capture enough of the novel, I think--none of the novel's heart, anyway. I find coming up with titles so hard. I think Where Sleep the Unquiet Dead is a line from a poem but I've been looking and can't find the poem anywhere. If someone knows the poem, please let me know!

I also think I've maybe found the beginning of the novel at last, after how many rewrites? Fingers crossed, because I've been excited about beginnings before and they haven't panned out. But this one woke me up this morning by calling me back to work on it, so I'm hopeful...

I just added a link to Petfinder. But I'm still steadfastly telling myself I can't add a puppy to my menagerie. After losing Amber on Nov 2 and Beorn on Dec 28, the house feels a little empty. But I'm not going to add a puppy! It's just a link... right?
